National Historic Chemical Landmarks

Chemistry came of age as a science in the late 1700’s-the same time America came of age as a nation. Over the next two centuries, chemists played key roles in expanding the frontiers of knowledge, advancing medicine and industry, and creating products from aspirin to zippers. This site tells their stories.

The ACS’ National Historic Chemical Landmarks Program celebrates the centrality of chemistry. The designation of seminal achievements in the history of chemistry – such as Tide® laundry detergent, Scotch Tape, nylon, plastics, and medicines – demonstrates how chemists have benefited society by fulfilling the ACS vision: Improving people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry.
